We learned about Cubism in Art. Cubism was a style of art invented about 100 years ago. Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque are two very famous artists who started the Cubism movement. They broke down images into lots of different parts and then put them back together like a puzzle…but one that has been put together incorrectly!! They often showed you things in the picture that you should not be able to see. They were experimenting with how to represent a 3D picture on a flat canvas.
Here are some examples of their work:

We looked at the work of another famous artist- Wassily Kandinsky. He is famous for his abstract paintings. Abstract art is a term used to describe work that shows what the artist feels and thinks, rather than what he or she sees. Here are some examples of Kandinsky’s abstract work:
This next painting was already familiar to us, as we had used it to inspire us in 1st Class.
Kandinsky also painted some paintings of buildings.
We used Kandinsky’s work to inspire our own cityscapes. Have a look and see how they turned out!
We looked at Vincent Van Gogh's famous sunflowers and allowed them to inspire our own paintings.

We also looked at the work of an Italian artist, Amedeo Modigliani. He is known for his portraits in which he elongated necks and faces.

We looked at the work of two American artists, Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock. Andy Warhol's style of art was known as Pop Art because he took inspiration from ads and celebrities.
Jackson Pollock was an abstract artist who created a new style of drip painting.

Bernard Hoyes is a Jamaican artist who creates bright, colourful paintings that reflect the traditions and culture of his country.
We used his work to inspire our own!
Pointillism is a style of painting in which small, clear dots of pure colour are arranged in patterns to create a picture. Georges Seurat and Paul Signac created this style of painting about 130 years ago.

We used cotton buds to create these wonderful pointillism paintings of the solar system. Have a look at how they turned out!
We painted these wonderful portraits of Tutankhamun portraits as part of our Ancient Egypt project. Can you spot Wally?!
Our Ancient Egypt project also inspired these oil pastel landscapes. We talked about perspective- how to make things look close or far away. We also discussed complementary colours to create an interesting contrast between sand and sky. Have a look!
We used liquid watercolours to paint these pictures of koi fish! We made sure to use special watercolour paper for the best results! Have a look at how they turned out!
